Volkswagen Passat (2014): the inside story

Volkswagen Passat (2014): the inside story
In early 2014, VW will release the next European Passat codenamed B8. For the fourth time in the model's history, the Passat will have a fundamental shift in DNA. After two switches from longitudinal to transverse engines (B3/B6), the next evolution will ride on Volkswagen's MQB platform. This modular components set provides an infinitely greater dimensional flexibility as well as a much more space-efficient packaging.
Even though B8 virtually maintains the current length, width and height, the interior is half a size bigger, the weight comes down by about 75 kilos, and the assembly can be sped up thanks to a larger number of prefabricated modules. For optimum economies of scale, MQB has been designed to cover almost the entire VW brand spectrum from the Polo to the Passat.

VW Passat (2014): what the B8 will do

Another key advantage of this architecture is its ability to spin off a variety of bodystyles at relatively low expenditure. In addition to the saloon and estate, the follow-up to the four-door Passat CC is already being planned. It may arrive early in 2013 or late in 2015, depending on the fate of two other potential Passat derivatives. One is the three-box Passat coupé which would be positioned one rung below the Audi A5.
The other one is the Passat Cabriolet which would feature a retractable hardtop to differentiate it from Audi's A5 soft-top and to qualify as up-market Eos replacement. While the core sedan and the wagon variants won´t make it to China and North America, the other Passat offspring have global marketing potential, sources say.

What will the B8 VW Passat look like?

Designwise, B8 will be crisper, sharper and more modern than B7 (pictured) which was essentially a major facelift of the previous car. Although horizontal design elements continue to dominate the more elegant and more dynamic silhouette, insiders predict new styling traits such as a bolder plan view, a more three-dimensional grille, more substantial C-posts and a more advanced LED light treatment with unmistakable graphics front and rear. Inside, we can expect a new touch of class along with the next generation MMI technology for an even more intuitive access.
Predictably, the engine line-up is as modular as the whole vehicle concept. In the works are EA288 (new modular four-cylinder diesel), EA211 (new modular four-cylinder petrol engines) and EA888 (third generation big bore four-cylinder petrol units). Here is what the Wolfsburg grapevine is predicting for B8:
• 1.4TSI/130bhp
• 1.4TSI/150bhp
• 1.8TSI/180bhp
• 2.0TSI/210bhp
• 2.0TSI/250bhp
• 1.6TDI/105bhp
• 2.0TDI/143bhp
• 2.0TDI/177bhp
• 2.0BiTDI/204bhp.
The VR6 will be dropped. Mild hybrid is likely to be standard, but one must pay extra for the plug-in hybrid which combines a choice of 50kW or 80kW electric motors with a four-cylinder petrol engine to yield an emission-free driving range of 12.4 and 37 miles respectively. Too sophisticated? Then check out the B8 with CNG which is based on the 150bhp TSI unit. DSG and 4Motion remain the most popular drivetrain-related options. An all-electric Passat blue e-motion is currently not on the cards.
Although the next Passat shares its MQB component set with the 2013 Golf VII and Audi A3, two major markets will keep the Passat name for different vehicles. In North America, the Passat remains faithful to the PQ platform it has recently adopted from the current Euro model.
In China, VW has just launched an XL version which uses bits and pieces from different corporate parts bins. The latter two models feature an extended wheelbase for more rear legroom and enhanced street cred.

So why didn't VW simply pair the two non-European cars?

Because American and Asian customers have different preferences. The status-conscious Asian clientele can't get enough leather, wood and chrome. The US buyers want more interior space and value for money. In exchange for more presence and content, the cars built in Anting and Chattanooga have been cautiously decontented - there is no 4WD for the VR6 model, nor the full choice of driver assistance systems, no high-end diesel, no Bluemotion fuel misers.
Instead, VW added a more powerful dual air-con for China and a more potent Fender sound system for the US. Despite the generous standard equipment, the fully loaded top-of-the-line export models cost roughly the same as an entry-level Passat marketed in the old world.

Lotus to launch new Exige-based rally car

Secret new cars

Lotus will launch an Exige-based rally car at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show, CAR has discovered. The company has announced it is broadening its already widespread motorsport activities to offer a race car for GT rallying categories.

Although Hethel no longer produces the Exige, CAR understands a successor is in the works and will be engineered as a lairy rear-wheel drive racer to slot beneath the Super 2000s.
There's no word yet on which formula in WRC or IRC the Lotus rally car will compete in. Privateers have competed in amateur rallying for years in Elises and Exiges, and Lotus sniffs an opportunity to sell them factory-prepped cars.

When will Lotus launch the Exige rally car?

Lotus will homologate the 300 models necessary in time for launch in January 2012, according to Claudio Berro, Lotus's director of motorsport. Insiders suggest it could in fact build a few hundred more than that figure.

Customer race cars like this make good business sense and Hethel expects to harvest a decent margin on the Exige racers, just as Prodrive does from rally-fettled Imprezas or Peugeot from its race hatchbacks.
Berro, Ferrari's F1 team manager a decade ago, is no stranger to rallying: he was co-driver in a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus and Italian Group 2 rally champion in 1981 and 1982.

Is Lotus trying to compete in every single motorsport formula?

It appears so! It already partners Renault in F1 and came seventh in its GT class at Le Mans in 2011. If it adds a factory rally team as well as flogging privateer cars, it would have one of the broadest spread of motorsport activities of any single brand.

Lotus chief executive Dany Bahar said: ‘Rather than spend a single pound on advertising, I would rather invest in motorsport. It’s so core to Lotus – and a great way to reach our potential customers.’

What’s next? Le Mans? The moon?

The company has also stated its intent to race in the LMP2 category at Le Mans. CAR understands that the company could even have a prototype ready to race in 2012, although other factions at Hethel believe this is too ambitious and 2013 is more likely.

Lotus is developing its own dry-sump 4.8-litre V8 for use in its future road and race cars. The LMP2 car will use the V8, which is being developed so it can be a stressed member suitable for top-level racing.

‘Our target is for it to rev to over 9000rpm,’ confides engineering chief Wolf Zimmerman. ‘This thing is going to sound amazing.’

Lotus will fire up its first prototype V8 at Hethel in August 2011.

Lexus GS (2012) spied at the 'Ring

Secret new cars

Click Thumbnails to Enlarge
This is the new Lexus GS, spied at the Nürburgring. Mr May might protest at the increasing number of new vehicles that are honed at this infamous German circuit, but testing here is as much about reliability and endurance as lap times. Read on for the full story on the new Lexus GS

So, four-cylinder diesels and an estate are presumably on the cards for the new Lexus GS?

Wrong, I’m afraid. There’s no Touring or Avant or any sort of load-lugger in the product plans. And Lexus has no desire to sell a diesel model either. However, with the vast majority of sales in the executive sector – at least in Europe – accounted for by small diesels (think BMW 520d, Audi A6 2.0 TDIs, Mercedes E220 CDI, and now Jaguar XF 2.2 D) Lexus is readying a four-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain for the new GS.
Beyond that, Lexus will stick with what it knows: a petrol V6 hybrid. Elsewhere in the world that engine will be offered without electrical assistance, but in the UK the new Lexus exec will only be available as a hybrid. This GS450h will still run a 3.5-litre V6, but expect a big leap forward from the 35.8mpg and 179g/km achieved by today’s car, to official figures easily ahead of the 44.9mpg and 145g/km that the bigger, heavier RX450h SUV can achieve. Once again the Lexus GS will major on refinement, but with electrical assistance there’ll also be performance to compete with the best V8-engined rivals.

What else do we know about the new Lexus GS?

That its look might prove a bit of a departure from the sedate styling that we currently associated with Lexus. The LF-Gh concept car unveiled at the 2011 New York motor show gave us a glimpse of the new design direction – and we hear it won’t be toned down quite as drastically as the CT200h was in its step from concept to production car. Visible on this prototype is an aggressive bodykit, plus fuel-saving LED front and rear lights.
Inside we hear the touch-screen will vanish, in place of the latest mouse-style controller that’s already appeared in the RX SUV and CT200h hatch. We’ll see the production car this autumn, at either the Frankfurt or Tokyo motor show, and UK sales start in summer 2012.

BMW 6-series Gran Coupe (2012): the scoop

Secret new cars

BMW 6-series Gran Coupe (2012): the scoop
We’ve driven BMW’s 6-series Convertible and Coupe, but there’s one more Six on the way from Munich. Revealed in our artist’s impression, it’s the 6-series Gran Coupe, a four-door Six to take on the Mercedes CLS and Audi A7.
Prototypes have already been spied on test, but this rendering reveals this true shape of the third 6-series model. It’s not quite as elegant as the CS that BMW canned during the recession, but it’ll still be much sleeker than its 5-series sister.

Full facts and figures on the new BMW 6-series Gran Coupe please?

In good time, because it’s still a year before this ‘four-door coupe’ goes on sale in the UK – it should reach British showrooms next summer. However, as this Gran Coupe (the name is expected to be taken from 2010’s concept) is effectively a stretched 6-series Coupe, that means a double wishbones front suspension set-up, a multi-link rear, and the same engines.
Or at least most of the engines. BMW is engineering the Gran Coupe to take the turbocharged 3.0 straight six (640i) and twin-turbo 4.4 V8 (650i), along with the 309bhp 640d unit, but we hear the 640i won’t be sold in the UK. The theory is that most buyers will take the economical diesel route, and those rich enough to be able to afford a large capacity petrol motor will have the cash to cough up for a big V8.

What else?

Other engines under consideration are a twin-turbo 2.0 four-cylinder (a 625i, which may come later in the Gran Coupe’s life to boost sales), and a flagship model boasting the same 552bhp and 502lb ft twin-turbo V8 that’s in the new M5 and forthcoming M6. An M Sport kit, with a butch bodykit, new wheels, different suspension, plus unique seats, steering wheel and other interior trimmings is a certainty.
The cabin will boast the same swooping dashboard as the Coupe and Convertible Sixes, but buyers of either will be unfamiliar with what’s in the back: two proper seats and lots of legroom.
UK sales start next summer, and BMW hopes to shift around 500 of these Gran Coupes in Blighty each year.

Fiat Panda (2012): the latest scoop

Secret new cars

Click Thumbnails to Enlarge
Fiat will show off the new Panda city car at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in mid September. Our artist’s impression shows a remarkably close vision of the new third-generation Panda.
All Fiat Pandas to date owe a debt to 1980’s Giugiaro original, one of the timeless, simple-but-boxy designs of recent years. The new 2012 Panda will be no different, keeping the distinctive third side window and monobox silhouette of today’s successful model.

Fiat Panda (2012): the lowdown

The new Panda will be around 10cm longer than today’s model, yet sits on the same wheelbase. It’s also a tad wider, to make more interior space.
In terms of positioning, the Panda won’t change much; it’s Fiat’s Twingo rival, but now injected with a dose of 500 style – particularly around the front grille and headlamps.
The wheelarches are said to be distinctively blistered for a squat stance, but the surfaces are if anything rounder than today’s slab-sided Panda.

The engines in the new Panda

Fiat is rolling out its excellent TwinAir engines to the new 2012 Panda. The petrols will be offered in 65bhp and 85bhp forms, plus there’s a bigger 1.2 four-cylinder mustering 69bhp.
Diesel fans on the Continent will be served by a 1.3 Multijet derv, cranking out 95bhp.
Go to Italy and you’ll see countless Panda 4x4s serving the rural community. The new one carries over the four-wheel drive system from today, and we’ll see the new Panda 4x4 at the end of 2012.
The Panda is based on a similar architecture to the inhouse minis the 500 and Ypsilon. That means manual transmisisons, or the choice of a Dualogic robotised manual ‘box.

When can I buy the new Fiat Panda?

After its Frankfurt debut, the new Panda will roll into showrooms in spring 2012. Prices won’t be much changed from today’s levels.
Going by the success of the current Panda, the new one should be one of the most promising small cars of next year.

Audi R8: more powerful V8 and V10 coming in 2012

Secret new cars

Click Thumbnails to Enlarge
The R8 supercar has been a big success story for Audi, but it’s not resting on its laurels. A facelift is coming and we hear in summer 2012, it’ll get a range of stronger engines.
The 5.2-litre V10 will be tuned to a punchier 533bhp – up from 518bhp  – and our sources in Munich suggest a seven-speed dual clutch S-tronic gearbox will be launched for the first time. So far, only a delicious old-school Ferrari open-gate manual 'box has been available, or a clunky robotised R-tronic auto.

Audi plans changes to the 2012 R8 V8 too

The entry-level Audi R8 will be revised heavily in 2012 as well: CAR has learned that its 4.2-litre V8 will be upgraded to the same spec as the Audi RS5's: it'll therefore muster a more useful 444bhp, up from 424bhp.
Ingolstadt types confirm there will be GT and GT Spyder variants again.

Audi R8 vs Lamborghini Gallardo: the facelifts

Although the R8 will be mildly facelifted, we suspect it'll be a very subtle model year change to the physical design of the car. Noodling with headlamp designs, millimetric changes to the LED spacing, that sort of thing.
Over at Sant'Agata, we hear there is no further facelift planned for the Lambo Gallardo, the R8's cousin. More special editions will be forthcoming, but Lambo fans will have to wait a further three years for the successor to the Gallardo.

Porsche 911 (2011) the clearest spyshots yet

Secret new cars

Click Thumbnails to Enlarge
Ever watched a woman badly applying her makeup while driving? That’s the look sported by this Porsche 911, which our spies have snapped barely disguised just outside the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen. They’re the clearest shots yet of the all-new 991-spec 911, and only the awkwardly applied camouflage around the front and rear lights is hiding the new (well, sort of new) styling.

So what can you tell me about the new Porsche 911?

The car in our pictures is the Carrera S variant, hence the quad exhausts and 20-inch wheels (wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber). Slung out behind the rear axle is an updated version of the existing 3.8-litre engine, uprated from 380bhp to 394bhp; the entry level Carrera will feature a new 3.4 with 345bhp, with 4bhp more than the current 3.6 manages.

The wheelbase is longer, but the overall design is still the same, with the same shapely hips and silhouette. More parts are made from aluminium to cut weight, while stop/start and electric power steering will help reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The new Porsche 911 will be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September.
